This week-long unit launches the 9th-grade Biology curriculum by challenging students to define life through the lens of systems and complexity. Students will transition from memorizing characteristics to analyzing the emergent properties of biological systems, culminating in a classification project based on synthetic or mysterious specimens.
The Dynamic Cell: Systems and Sustainability
This 4-week unit explores the cell as the fundamental system of life. Students will move beyond simple labeling to understand how cellular structures function as an integrated system, maintaining homeostasis through energy conversion and transport. The unit concludes with a focus on how cellular malfunctions impact the organism, linking microscopic processes to macroscopic health.
